WHAT IS the Bertrand Russell Society (BRS)?
Founded in 1974, the Society seeks to foster a better understanding of
the life, work, and writings of Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) and how his
contributions relate to today's world. As a philosopher, mathematician,
educator, social critic and political activist, Russell authored over 70
books and thousands of essays and letters addressing a myriad of topics.
Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950, Russell was a fine literary
stylist, one of the foremost logicians ever, and a gadfly for improving
the lives of men and women.

ACTIVITIES OF THE BRS
ANNUAL MEETING:
The Bertrand Russell Society holds a three-day annual meeting featuring
scholarly and popular presentations about Russell and related subjects,
a business meeting, a Red Hackle hour (in honor of Russell's favorite refreshment),
a banquet and ample opportunities for interaction with fellow attendees.
Usually scheduled in June in a university setting, annual meetings have
taken place in New York City, Washington, D.C., Columbia, MD, Fredonia,
NY, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Toronto, and Hamilton, Ontario, site
of the Bertrand
Russell Archives at McMaster University.
The 1996 Annual Meeting was held at Drew University in Madison, NJ,
on May 3-5, 1996. The 1997 is tentatively scheduled to be held May 30-June
1 at the Center for Inquiry in Buffalo, NY, in conjunction with the Council
for Secular Humanism and the Humanist Association of Canada.
CALL FOR PAPERS:
The BRS Prizes for Papers program awards annually
two prizes for the best new papers about Bertrand Russell, one to an undergraduate
and one to a graduate student or non-academic. Please keep these in mind
for yourself, your colleagues or students!
OTHER RUSSELL SOCIETY ACTIVITIES:
-
The BRS publishes The
Bertrand Russell Society Quarterly (in February, May, August and
November). (Tables of Contents and sample articles are included here. Interested
persons are invited to submit papers to the editor, Michael Rockler; his
address is given in the list of "Directors and Officers," above.)
-
The BRS
Library sells Russell-related books and also lends books, papers and
videos to BRS members.
-
The BRS bestows an annual BRS Book Award for the best new book in Russell
studies.
-
The BRS bestows an annual BRS Award to an individual or an organization
whose work best furthers the interests and commitments of Bertrand Russell.
(An added benefit is that awardees get a link to their home pages here!)
-
The BRS sponsors a paper-session on Russell at the annual Eastern Division
meeting of the American Philosophical
Association.
-
The BRS helps support Russell scholarship and the Bertrand Russell Archives
whenever possible and maintains this Web site as a clearinghouse for information
on Russell and related subjects.

MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
MEMBER ACTIVITIES AND BENEFITS:
BRS members receive two journals, The Bertrand Russell Society
Quarterly (successor to the BRS Newsletter) and the semiannual Russell:
The Journal of the Bertrand Russell Archives. Members also have
the right to borrow materials from the BRS Library and to vote in BRS elections.
Members may be as active or inactive as they wish. All are encouraged to
attend annual meetings and otherwise take part in Society affairs, by serving
on a committee, making an annual meeting presentation, or undertaking some
special task. Some members are very active. Some wish merely to be kept
informed. No matter.
NEW MEMBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
To join, please e-mail John Lenz.
Include your mailing address so we can send you (the old-fashioned way)
a BRS brochure with a short application form.
Membership is on an annual basis, with renewals due on January
1. Whenever you join, all new memberships are retroactive to January 1,
so that all members receive the same number of publications (four newsletters
and two journals) each year. The one exception is for new members joining
in October-December; their first "year" lasts through December of the following
year.

Writings by Bertrand Russell on the Internet
All electronic texts of Russell's books and essays known to us are listed
here in alphabetical order. Many of these are supplied by Cosma Shalizi.
Eight essays originally came from "The Watchful Eye Russell Page" maintained
by Bruce Macleod (but apparently no longer available). We thank these Internet
heroes. See also the other Russell web sites listed below under
"Related Web Sites."
